Advertising Fashion Brands to the UK Ethnic Market: How ethnic models influence ethnic consumer purchase behavior

This research aims to find out if ethnic minorities who are born in the UK are influenced by fashion brand adverts using different ethnic models. The research aimed to identify whether branded labels are a crucial influential factor in fashion purchasing and if so how influential to ethnic consumers are they. The results capture the motivations, feelings and perceptions, justifying ethnic consumer purchase behavior. It was important for the researcher to gain attitudes towards current and future representation of ethnic minorities represented in fashion advertisements in order to establish ethnic advertising for fashion brands in terms of ethnic consumers considering these brands. This subject illustrates the importance that ethnic identity and culture of the respondents play a key role in the ethnic consumer behaviour towards fashion brand advertising. The findings highlight key areas that fashion companies could gain if they understood different ethnic groups to give them a competitive edge over other brands and satisfy the needs of the British ethnic demographic in the UK.

1931 Homecoming Court

1931 Homecoming Court

The 1931 Homecoming Court for Bristol Tennessee High School. My maternal grandmother was the queen. I scanned this from her high school scrapbook, which had all sorts of clipping of her activities from captain of the basketball team to roles in school plays. (The blue cast on sections comes from a coating on the photo.)

Included in her memory book was this newspaper clipping:
"10 Commandments Given for Girls"
COALVILLE, ENGLAND, February 25 - Father Joesph Degen has started another offensive in his one-man war against the petting party.
Carrying on his campaign to make Coalville black in name only, he has formulated the following "ten commandments" for the girls in his parish.
1. Do not parade with an all-dressed-up-and-nowhere-to-go air waiting to take a walk with the first nice looking boy who speaks to you.
2. Always tell your mother where you are going and with whom, and return home on time.
3. Do not accept gifts of clothing, jewelery, or money from men. Indebtedness creates an obligation.
4. Do not let boys treat you to intoxicants. The hot blood which courses through the veins of youth is stimulant enough.
5. Avoid demoralizing dances, where there is little or no attempt at supervision, or where couples are permitted to hang about in obscure corners outside the premises.
6. Beware of the "something-for-nothing" type of man, who offers you a joy ride in his car--especially if you know nothing more about him than that he has a Charlie Chaplin mustache and scented hair.
7. Hockey, lacrosse, tennis and dancing are healthier forms of excitement than street flirtations.
8. Beware of the man who, after an acquaintanceship of only ten minute, wants to put his arm round your waist. Do not make yourself cheap, even to a Duke's son.
9. If you have found a real boy friend, be true to him and don't flit like a butterfly one to another. Take him home and introduce him to your folks.
10. Do not expect to go through life attired in silk and chiffon, waited on hand and foot, and never doing any hard work. Few men can afford to keep a luxurious and expensive fashion plate. You must learn to be useful as well as ornamental.

Happy To Be Her (03-01-09) (029) (5/52)

Happy To Be Her (03-01-09) (029) (5/52)

Happy To Be Me Doll was a gift to me from my parents around 1990. The doll came with a lot of paperwork about how she was better than Barbie, because she was proportioned like a "real" person, which I suppose is true. She has a human looking body, with a rib cage, nipples, navel, flat feet, and anatomical correctness. Her face and hair are quite pretty. However, I wasn't too pleased with her when I received her when I was a girl. She didn't have any clothes except for the one (pretty cheap) dress she came in, she couldn't wear anything because she was bigger than Barbie, she only had one pair of grandma shoes, and she stayed in her box... I took her out once in a while, read her booklets and stuff, and then put her away again.

She's grown on me over the years (though i still don't have clothes that fit her and she's still wearing the grandma shoes.." but I think she's a pretty doll and I like her. She's really well made and is a nice looking doll.

Just for the record, I don't buy into that whole "Barbie perverts the mind of young girls!" thing.. But I appreciate what this doll was trying to do.

The company had planned to make more dolls, ethnic versions, and male dolls.. but the company flopped and they were never produced that I know of. I need to scan her booklet so you can see it. Unfortunately, I feel most sorry for the woman who sunk her life savings into this project.. her dream.. because I find it sad that it failed, because these are nice dolls.

Happy is wearing a vintage dress that I got with a lot of vintage barbie clothes. It is really cute.... I don't know where it came from.. it fits Barbie perfectly and is really well made but I've never found it in any book. It's untagged, except for a snap which seems to read "CCRF"

New Club Kids: London Party Fashion in the Noughties

New Club Kids: London Party Fashion in the Noughties

This book s vibrant photographs reveal the outrageous fashion of London s pulsating club scene in the 21st century. The Noughties saw the rise of a new generation of Club Kids following in the footsteps of their predecessors - the original Club Kids of New York City, who, in turn, had followed London's Blitz generation. In the early 1980s, the Blitz Club in London's Covent Garden became the focal point for an alternative club scene-frequented by Adam Ant, Boy George, Siouxsie Sioux and Steve Strange-which spawned even more radical clubs such as Leigh Bowery's infamous Taboo club in London's Leicester Square. Bowery famously enjoined, 'Dress as though your life depends on it or don't bother', a mantra the new Club Kids have adopted as their own. They dress outrageously, with a penchant for kitsch and anti-fashion. Often with a mixture of their own self-made outfits and carefully selected labels (predominantly Vivienne Westwood), oversized accessories, excessive amounts of make-up and frequently highly androgynous looks, these flamboyant clubbers have created a vibrant New Club Kids' scene in London's bohemian nightlife underground. Fabulous or trashy, beautiful or scary, glamorous or freaky - meet the New Club Kids in these incredible photographs.

Essential Knits for Kids: 20 Fresh, New Looks for Children Two to Five

For the first time, this popular designer unveils fashions just for toddlers and preschoolers. Featuring children involved in activities from nursery school and birthday parties to dance lessons and sports, the book presents 20 charming modern projects organized into three collections. The first features designs that keep kids comfy while they are hanging out at home, including a double-sided throw for cuddling in front of the TV and a knitted rag doll for both playtime and bedtime. Because every child loves a party, the second collection is devoted to dressy designs for girls such as a cashmere shrug that can be worn over a party dress and a cute beaded bag just right for carrying party essentials. For boys there is a pattern for a good-looking polo shirt with buttons and a collar—and it can be paired with a stretchy striped tie that can be slipped over the head. The final collection focuses on items for the outdoors, including a boy's parka, a girl's coat with scarf, and a fabric-lined bag with its own striped pencil case. Practicality prevails in all the projects; they are knitted in beautiful, classic yarns that are soft and gentle against a young child's skin but are also sturdy and easy to wash and dry.
